Chesterfield County Overview
Created in 1785, Chesterfield County, South Carolina, is north of the Midlands on the border with North Carolina. As of the 2015 census, the population was 46,017. The county seat is Chesterfield; however, the largest community is Cheraw. The county has a total area of 799 square miles of land, plus seven square miles of water. The nationally protected Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge lies within the county lines. Three North Carolina counties border to the north, northwest, and northeast: respectively Anson, Union, and Richmond counties. Additional neighboring counties are: Marlboro to the east, Darlington to the southeast, Kershaw to the southwest, and Lancaster to the west.
