Macon County can be found in the western region of North Carolina. Its county seat is Franklin. The county was created in 1828 from a portion of Haywood County and named after Nathaniel Macon. He served as a representative of North Carolina in both houses of Congress. The total area of the county is 520 square miles with a population of 33,922 according to the 2010 census.
