Macon County, North Carolina Overview

Macon County can be found in the western region of North Carolina. Its county seat is Franklin. The county was created in 1828 from a portion of Haywood County and named after Nathaniel Macon. He served as a representative of North Carolina in both houses of Congress. The total area of the county is 520 square miles with a population of 33,922 according to the 2010 census. The counties surrounding Macon County are Swain County (north), Jackson County (east), Rabun County in Georgia (south), Clay County (southwest), Cherokee County (west), and Graham County (northwest).
