Weston County is located in the northeastern region of Wyoming with its county seat, Newcastle. The county was formed in 1890 by the legislature of Wyoming Territory and named after a geologist and surveyor, Jefferson B. Weston, who found rich coal deposits in the area. The county’s total area measures 2,400 square miles with an estimated population of 7,236 (2016). The county is bordered in the north by Crook County, in the notheast by Lawrence County (SD), in the east by Pennington County (SD), in the southeast by Custer County (SD), in the south by Niobrara County, in the southwest by Converse County, and in the west by Campbell County. The County Clerk serves as the Clerk to the Board of Commissioners. He/she prepares, records, and distributes the agendas and minutes of the meetings. The Clerk also serves as Chief Election Officer, responsible for conducting all countywide elections and overseeing voter registration. In addition, the Clerk also handles the budgets and accounting of the County as well as the Personnel office. Other duties of the Clerk include issuing certificates of title for motor vehicles, liquor licenses, and marriage licenses; filing personal, federal, and state tax liens, recording all real estate related records; providing public access to these records; and administering notary oaths.
