Laramie County is located in the southeastern tip of Wyoming. Cheyenne is the county seat as well as the state capital. The county was originally formed as part of the Dakota Territory in 1867 and named in honor of a French-Canadian fur trader, Jacques La Ramee. In 1869, the county become part of the Wyoming Territory. According to the 2016 census, an estimated 98,136 people live in the 2,688-square mile area which makes this the most populated county in the state. The adjacent counties are Goshen County in the north, Banner County in the northeast, Kimball County in the east, Weld County (CO) in the south, Larimer County (CO) in the southwest, Albany County in the west, and Platte County in the northwest. The County Clerk serves as secretary to the Board of Commissioners.
