Crook County is located in the northeastern tip of Wyoming. The county seat is Sundance. The county was established in 1875 by the legislature of the Wyoming Territory. It was named in honor of a commander who fought during the American Civil War and the Indian Wars, Brigadier General George Crook. The county’s total area measures 2,865 square miles with an estimated population of 7,464 (2016). The adjacent counties are Carter County (MT) in the north, Lawrence County and Butte County (SD) in the east, Weston County in the south, Campbell County in the west, and Powder River County (MT) in the northwest. In Crook County, the Clerk serves as the County Recorder and Ex-Officio Register of Deeds. He/she is responsible for maintaining all land records including mineral leases and mining claims; filing and indexing UCC’s, Security Agreements, Federal and State Tax Liens and Releases, Corner Recordations, and Notary Bonds; recording land documents; filing plat maps; and recording military discharges. The Clerk also acts as secretary to the Board of Commissioners and Board of Equalization. In addition, the Clerk is the Chief Budget Officer and Chief Elections Officer of the county. Other duties of the Clerk include filing liens on titles, issuing transient merchants licenses, issuing liquor licenses, and managing county property insurance records.
