Campbell County is located in the northeastern region of Wyoming. Gillette is the county seat. The county was founded in 1911 from portions of Crook County and Weston County. It is believed to have been named in honor of either John Allen Campbell, a governor of the Wyoming Territory, or Robert Campbell, an early trapper. The county’s total area measures 4,807 square miles with a population of 48,803 (2016). The adjacent counties are Powder River County (MT) in the north, Crook County in the northeast, Weston County in the southeast, Converse County in the south, Johnson County in the west, and Sheridan County in the northwest.
