York County Overview

York County, established in 1785 is in South Carolina and as of the 2010 census, York had a population of 226,073. The county seat is York; however, the largest community is Rock Hill. With a total area of 681 square miles of land, plus 15 square miles of water, the county is home to several rivers and mountains. Mountain ranges are: Henry’s Knob, Joe’s Mountain, Nanny Mountain, and King’s Mountain. York County is in north central South Carolina, along the North Carolina border. Its natural boundaries are the Broad River on the west and the Catawba River on the east. All of York County is within the piedmont region. Although heavily wooded in many rural areas and retaining a predominantly rural character in its western sector, York County is part of the greater Charlotte metropolitan region and includes Rock Hill, the county’s largest city, as well as the smaller cities of Tega Cay and York and the smaller towns of Clover, Fort Mill, Hickory Grove, McConnells, Sharon, and Lake Wylie. Henry’s Knob, is the site of a former open-pit mining operation for the world’s largest deposit of kyanite stands at 1,120 feet above sea level. A border county separating North Carolina and South Carolina, York County shares boundaries with the following counties in both states: Gaston County, North Carolina – north, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina – northeast, Lancaster County – east, Chester County – south, Union County – southwest, Cherokee County – west, and Cleveland County, North Carolina – northwest. The Clerk of Court is an elected official who serves a 4-year term. The Clerk of Court serves both the Circuit Court and the Family Court and is responsible for docket management, receipt of fees, fines and costs, maintenance of all court records and submission of reports to a variety of state and federal agencies. Circuit Court is divided into General Sessions (Criminal) and Common Pleas (Civil) cases. Some of the Clerk of Court duties for these courts include receipt of criminal warrants, jury management and staffing the courtrooms while court is in session. The Clerk of Court is also responsible for Family Court and the collection and disbursement of court ordered child support and/or alimony payments, issuance of Rules to Show Cause, child support enforcement and filing of Orders of Protection. The Clerk of Court for York County also serves as the Register of Deeds and is responsible for recording all property transactions and records as required by state law.
