Newberry County Overview
Established in 1785, Newberry County is in South Carolina. The origin of the name is not known. The population was 37,508 as of the 2010 census. The county seat, Newberry, is also the largest community. Since the 1970s the population of Newberry County has been growing due to increasing local economic prosperity. The county has a total area of 647 square miles, all but 17 square miles (of water) is land. Newberry is home to a portion of the nationally protected Sumter National Forest. Adjacent counties are: Laurens to the northwest, Greenwood to the southwest, Saluda to the south, Richland and Lexington to the southeast, Fairfield to the east, and Union to the north. Responsivities of the clerk follow: support functions necessary for the operation of the Circuit and Family Courts in Newberry County. These functions include collection of alimony, child support and fines & fees. Also, we create copies of legal instruments and we serve as the administrator over jury selection. This office also records and maintains all real estate records pertaining to property in Newberry County. Most of our records are available to the public unless sealed by a Circuit Court or Family Court Judge. Copies are $0.30 per page. In General Sessions Court, our office is responsible for accepting and maintaining all warrants, tickets, bonds, indictments, etc. All General Session dockets are prepared by the Eighth Circuit Solicitor’s Office. Common Pleas Court is responsible for accepting and maintaining all paperwork in civil cases. We also prepare rosters for the upcoming terms of Common Pleas Court. Family Court is responsible for maintaining the records of the Family Court in the manner designated by Court Administration. Within this record keeping function are maintenance of the cases, submission of statistical reports and receipt and disbursement of alimony, child support and other payments to be made through the court. The Real Estate Department is responsible for filing and maintaining all legal documents that pertain to real and personal property in Newberry County. These documents may consist of deeds. Mortgages, contracts, leases, power of attorneys, plats of property, right of way easements and many other types of documents.
