Marion County Overview

Marion County South Carolina was established in 1800 and named in honor of the infamous Swamp Fox and Revolutionary War hero, Brigadier General Francis Marion. As of the 2010 census, the population was 33,062. Marion is both the county seat and the largest community. The county is home to a portion of the nationally protected Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge and is 494 square miles in total area. All that area is land, except for five square miles of water. Adjacent counties are: Dillon to the north, Horry to the east, Georgetown to the south, Williamsburg to the southwest, and Florence to the west. There are more than a dozen locations in the county that are registered on the National Register of Historic Places. A total of seven zip codes are used by the county, the largest of which is 29571.
