Cherokee County Overview
Established in 1897 and named for the Native American tribe, Cherokee County is in the state of South Carolina. As of the 2010 census, the population was 55,342. Gaffney is both the county seat and the largest community. With a total area of only 397 square miles, 393 of which is land (the remaining four-square miles is water), it is the third smallest county by land area in the state. It is the fourth smallest in the state by total area. The county is home to four mountain peaks, Draytonville (also known as McKown’s Mountain, a farmer who owned the land), Brown’s Mountain, Thicketty Mountain, and Whitaker Mountain. Cowpens National Battlefield and a portion of Kings Mountain National Military Park reside in the county lines, both of which are nationally protected areas. Adjacent counties are: York to the east, Union to the south, and Spartanburg to the west. Two North Carolina counties also border with Cherokee, and they are Cleveland to the north, and Rutherford to the northwest. Seven zip codes are utilized by the county, the most populous is 29340.
