Calhoun County Overview
Calhoun County in South Carolina was established in 1908 and named for former US Vice President, Senator, Representative and cabinet member from the state, John C. Calhoun. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 15,175, which made it the third least populous county in the state. St. Mathews is both the county seat and the largest community. The county has a total area of 381 square miles of land, plus 11 square miles of water. Adjacent counties are: Richland to the north, Sumter to the northeast, Clarendon to the east, Orangeburg to the south, and Lexington to the northwest.
