Established in 1800, Barnwell County, South Carolina had a population of 22,621 as of the 2010 census. The county seat of Barnwell is also the largest community in the county. It was named after John Barnwell, a local figure in the Revolutionary War. The county has a total area of 548 square miles of land, plus nine square miles of water. Neighboring counties are: Aiken to the north, Bamberg, and Orangeburg to the east, Allendale to the southeast, and Burke County, Georgia to the southwest.
