Abbeville County Overview

Established in 1785 and named for a location in France of the same name, Abbeville County, South Carolina had a population of 25,417 as of the 2010 census. Alphabetically, it is the first county in the US. The county seat and largest community is Abbeville. The county is home to a portion of nationally protected, Sumter National Forest. The total area is 490 square miles of land, plus 21 square miles of water. Adjacent counties are: Greenville, and Anderson to the north, Laurens to the northeast, Greenwood to the east, McCormick to the southeast, and Elbert County, Georgia to the west. John C. Calhoun, (1782–1850), born in the Abbeville District, United States Congressman and United States Senator from South Carolina, Secretary of War, Secretary of State, and Vice President of the United States was a resident of the county. The Clerk of Court Office is responsible for all aspects of General Sessions, and Common Pleas. We accept filings and maintain all records pertaining to each of these courts. Our office also handles all ROD (register of deeds) recordings. Copies of any record (except those sealed by the court) are public record and can be reviewed in person and copies obtained for a fee of $.25 per page. The Register of Deeds (ROD) is responsible for maintaining all records including deeds, mortgages, plats, power of attorney, contracts, satisfaction, and any other documents affecting title to real property is recorded.
