Sargent County is located in the U.S. state of North Dakota. The county was formed in 1883 and named after Homer E. Sargent, a general manager of the Northern Pacific Railroad. The county seat is Forman. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2016, the county has a population of approximately 3,890 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 867 square miles of which 859 square miles is land and 8.4 square miles is water. Sargent County borders the following counties: Ransom County to the north; Richland County to the east; Marshall County, South Dakota to the south; Brown County, South Dakota to the southwest; Dickey County to the west and LaMoure County, North Dakota to the northwest. The Clerk of Court is also called as the Custodian of Court Files because the clerks mostly spend their time working with the legal records. The Clerk of District Court primary administrative duty is the administration of court records. These records fall into several categories:
- Civil actions are proceedings concerning the rights of private individuals. They include divorces, foreclosures, and personal injury/property damages cases.
- Restricted action files aren’t open to the public. They include formal juvenile proceedings, adoptions and paternity suits.
- Criminal actions or felonies are handled in district court. These are serious crimes which include murder, gross sexual imposition, and burglary.
- Child support claims.
- The Clerks of District Court are designated agents for USA passports and handles passport applications.
- Vital records such as birth and death certificates are registered in this office.
- Burial permits are issued in this office.
