Morton County, North Dakota Overview

Morton County is located in the U.S. state of North Dakota. The county was formed in 1873 and named after Governor of Indiana Oliver Hazard Perry Throck Morton. The county seat is Mandan. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2016, the county has a population of approximately 30,809 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,945 square miles of which 1,926 square miles is land and 19 square miles is water. Morton County borders the following counties: Oliver County to the north; Burleigh County to the northeast; Emmons County to the east; Sioux County to the southeast; Grant County to the south; Stark County to the west and Mercer County to the northwest. Morton County Recorder’s Office Information

The County Recorder’s Office duties are as follows:

  • Keep a record of each patent, deed, mortgage, bill of sale, judgment, decree, lien, certificate of sale and other instruments that are required to be filed in proper books and the computer system provided for such recording, upon receipt of the filing and recording fees.
  • Each recorded document shall state the date, hour and minute of recording, along with the book and page or document number.
  • Maintain the land tract index and computer system.
  • Assist the public in finding information as found in the real estate records.

The information filed and recorded in the recorder’s office is used by the auditor, treasurer, commissioners and other county officials, along with the general public and business entities. The real estate record is the basis for the auditor’s assessment rolls and the tax collection process of the treasurer.
