Foster County is located in the U.S. state of North Dakota. The county was formed in 1873 and named after either James S. Foster or George I. Foster, brother, and prominent farmers during the territorial days. The county seat is Carrington. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2018, the county has a population of approximately 3,343 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 647 square miles, of which 635 square miles is land and 11 square miles is water. Foster County borders the following counties: Eddy County to the north; Griggs County to the east; Stutsman County to the south; and Wells County to the west. Foster County has seven zip codes.
