Wells County District Court’s Office Information

The Clerk of Court handles criminal and civil case records, hears all felony criminal cases, domestic relations cases and civil cases. In addition, the Clerk attends each session of district court; maintains records of orders and judgments of the court; draws names of jurors, and keeps records of jurors and witnesses for trials. The Clerk of District Court also monitors all restitution, fines, costs and fees owed by defendants and provides birth and death certificate applications.

Wells County Recorder’s Office Information

The Recorder, formerly Register of Deeds, is an elected position in Wells County. The Recorder acts as a custodian of all land records in the county and is responsible for recording and processing all legal documents related to real estate. The documents include all varieties of deeds, probate instruments, patents, plats, contracts for deed, mortgages, assignments, satisfactions, releases, easements, highway right-of-way instruments, oil and gas leases, affidavits and many other related documents. In addition, this office is also responsible for non-judicial duties that consist of marriage license, passports, death certificates, military discharge and toxicology reports.
