Billings County is located in the U.S. state of North Dakota. The county was formed in 1879 and named after Frederick H. Billings (1823–1890), who was the president of the Northern Pacific Railroad. The county seat is Medora. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2018, the county has a population of approximately 783 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,153 square miles, of which 1,149 square miles is land and 4.6 square miles is water. Billings County borders the following counties: McKenzie County to the north; Dunn County to the northeast; Stark County to the east; Slope County to the south; and Golden Valley County to the west.
