Columbus County, North Carolina

Columbus County is located in the state of North Carolina. The county was established in 1808 from parts of Bladen and Brunswick counties and named after the legendary explorer, Christopher Columbus. Whiteville is the largest city in the county and also the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 58,098 people and a total area of 954 square miles, of which 16 square miles is water and 937 square miles is land, making it the third-largest county in North Carolina by land area. Columbus County borders the following counties: Bladen County to the north; Pender County to the northeast; Brunswick County to the southeast; Horry County, South Carolina, to the southwest; and Robeson County to the northwest.

As of 2015, Kandance H. Bullock is the current Columbus County Register of Deeds.  The Register of Deeds is the official county recorder and is responsible for filing, recording, and maintaining all land transactions, birth, deaths, and marriages that occur in Columbus County.

All documents/instruments maintained by the office of the Register of Deeds are open to the public and can be accessed by doing a background check online or by visiting the office of the clerk in person during office hours. To obtain public records online, you will be required to do a public records search online through the Columbus County Register of Deeds Website. The site has easy to follow steps and links that will direct you to the records that are available. The charges for obtaining public records are $10.00 for certified copies and $.25 for a plain copy. When obtaining copies of public records in person, you will be required to present the Register of Deeds with a completed Record Request form. Alternatively, the form can be mailed to the office of the Register of Deeds, along with a self-addressed stamped envelope and the appropriate fee.
