Chatham County, North Carolina

Chatham County is located in the Piedmont area of the state of North Carolina. The county was established in 1771 from parts of Orange County and named after William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham, who served as British Prime Minister and opposed harsh colonial policies. Siler City is the largest town in the county, while Pittsboro is the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 63,505 people and a total area of 710 square miles, of which 28 square miles is water and 682 square miles is land. Chatham County   borders the following counties: Orange County to the north, Durham County to the northeast, Wake County to the east, Harnett County to the southeast, Lee County to the south, Moore County to the southwest, Randolph County to the west, and Alamance County to the northwest.

The Chatham County Register of Deeds is charged with the responsibility of maintaining all public records in the county.
