Catawba County can be found in the northwest region of North Carolina. The county seat is Newton. The county was created in 1842 from a portion of Lincoln County and named in honor of the Native Americans who once lived in the area surrounding Catawba River, the Catawba tribe. The county’s total area is 413 square miles with its population estimated at 154,810 (2010). The county is bordered by Alexander County, in the east by Iredell County, in the south by Lincoln County, in the west by Burke County, and in the northwest by Caldwell County.
