Sullivan County, New York

Sullivan County is located in the state of New York. The county was formed after splitting from Ulster County in 1809 and named after Major General John Sullivan, who was a hero in the American Revolutionary War. Mamakating is the largest town in the county, while Monticello is the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 77,547 people and a total area of 997 square miles, of which 29 square miles is water and 968 square miles is land. Sullivan County borders the following counties: Delaware County to the north; Ulster County to the northeast; Orange County to the southeast; Pike County, Pennsylvania, to the southwest; and Wayne County, Pennsylvania, to the west.

Daniel L. Briggs is the current Sullivan County Clerk, as of 2015. The office of the clerk is charged with the responsibility of filing, recording, and maintaining all public records and legal documents relating to deeds, mortgages, liens, and civil and criminal cases. In addition, the office of the County Clerk serves as an official passport application acceptance agency, files military discharges, processes pistol permit applications, and processes notary public licenses, as well as issues DBA’s.
