Torrance County, New Mexico Overview

Torrance County is located in the U.S. state of New Mexico. The county was formed in 1903 and named after Francis J. Torrance, the developer of the New Mexico Central Railroad. The county seat is Estancia. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2016, the county has a population of approximately 15,302 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,346 square miles of which 3,345 square miles is land and 0.9 square miles is water. Torrance County borders the following counties: Santa Fe County to the north; San Miguel County to the north; Guadalupe County to the east; Lincoln County to the south; Socorro County to the south; Valencia County to the west and Bernalillo County to the northwest. Torrance County Assessor’s Office Information

The County Assessor’s Office primary responsibility is to determine the fair market value of all property within Torrance County for property tax collection purposes. The County Assessor’s Office values property which includes real property; manufactured homes; commercial property; livestock; and business personal property. Most of the collected taxes are used to fund the cost of local government (Torrance County, the Town of Estancia, Mountainair, Willard, Encino and the City of Moriarty), the public school districts (Estancia, Moriarty-Edgewood and Mountainair), emergency services (sheriff, fire departments and ambulance), and special taxing districts (East Torrance, Claunch Pinto, Carrizozo and Edgewood Soil and Water Conservation Districts).

  • Original Death Certificate (No Photocopy) (5 days must have passed from date of death).

Torrance County Clerk’s Office Information

The County Clerk serves as ex-officio recorder of the county. The County Clerk also acts as the chief election officer of the county and is responsible administering all elections in the county. The Clerk has numerous duties associated with the Probate Court. As ex-officio clerk of the County Commission, the County Clerk attends sessions of the board, keeps the seals, and record of the proceedings, resolutions and the decisions on all questions concerning the raising of money. The Clerk signs all orders as issued by the board. The County Clerk is also responsible to file, keep, and maintain all accounts and actions of the Board of County Commission. The County Clerk issues marriage licenses, liquor licenses and other business licenses. Fee for marriage license is $25.00. The County Clerk’s Office records, files and preserves all types of documents such as deeds, mortgages, agreements, Uniform Commercial Code fillings, satisfaction of mortgages, liens, maps, etc. All documents recorded by the County Clerk’s Office are public records.
