Sierra County is located in the U.S. state of New Mexico. The county was formed in 1884 and possibly named after for the Black Range. (Sierra is mountain range in Spanish.). The county seat is Truth or Consequences. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2016, the county has a population of approximately 11,191 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,236 square miles of which 4,179 square miles is land and 57 square miles is water. Sierra County borders the following counties: Catron County to the northwest; Socorro County to the north; Lincoln County to the northeast; Otero County to the east; Doña Ana County to the south; Luna County to the south and Grant County to the west. The Assessor is an elected official of Sierra County.
