Hidalgo County is located in the U.S. state of New Mexico. The county was formed in 1920 and named after Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, the priest who is known as the Father of Mexican Independence. The county seat is Lordsburg. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2016, the county has a population of approximately 4,302 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,446 square miles of which 3,437 square miles is land and 9.1 square miles is water. Hidalgo County borders the following counties: Grant County to the north; Luna County to the east; Cochise County, Arizona to the west; Greenlee County, Arizona to the northwest; Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico to the southwest; Ascensión, Chihuahua, Mexico to the southeast and Janos, Chihuahua, Mexico to the south. The Hidalgo County Assessor’s goal is to provide fair and equitable assessment of all real and personal property for county taxing authorities. The Assessor determines property value of homes, businesses, and other taxable property within the County for ad valorem tax purposes. The office compiles the tax roll for the County Treasurer for real property (land and improvements), personal property (business equipment), livestock and manufactured homes. The Assessor’s office maintains current and correct ownership records of all property within the county. The Assessor also determines if property is exempt by the state of New Mexico.

Hidalgo County Probate Court Office Information
The Probate Court office responsibilities are as follows:
- Probate Court is responsible for the management of informal probate proceedings.
- It conducts marriage ceremonies of those holding a NM marriage license.
- It aids heirs in timely resolution of issues regarding real and personal property of deceased persons and alleviates the need for attorneys in matters easily completed by ordinary citizens.
Once a probate case is filed, it should be kept open until all creditors receive notice and make claims, taxes are paid and estate assets are distributed. Once the probate is closed, the Personal Representative no longer has authority to act for the estate. The recording fee to file for an informal probate in the Probate Court is $30.00. Certification of filed documents is $1.00 per document. Copies of the files can be provided by the court for $.25 per page.
