The county was formed in 1842 and named after Mississippi River, the second-longest river in the United States which forms Missouri’s eastern border. The county seat is Charleston. The Circuit Clerk is an elected position that holds a four-year term and is elected by the county at large. The Circuit Clerk is mainly responsible for maintaining complete and accurate records of the court, collections, accounting for, and disbursing all monies paid into the court; and performing other duties, as necessary to assist in the court in performing its duties.

Mississippi County Recorder of Deeds Office Information

The Recorder of Deeds an elected position that holds a four-year term. The responsibilities of the Recorder of Deeds Office is to record, index, and preserve various land record documents that include deeds, mortgages, mechanics leans, releases and plats, among others. To allow full access to deeds recorded throughout the office history, several indexes are also maintained, which include grantor-grantee indexes, tract indexes, and plat maps. The Recorder of Deeds also handles marriage license applications, and issues certified copies of marriage licenses. This office has records of marriage licenses that back to the early 1900’s.
