Mississippi County is located in the U.S. state of Missouri. The county was formed in 1842 and named after Mississippi River, the second-longest river in the United States which forms Missouri’s eastern border. The county seat is Charleston. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 14,282 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 429 square miles of which 412 square miles is land and 17 square miles is water. Mississippi County borders the following counties: Alexander County, Illinois to the north; Ballard County, Kentucky to the northeast across the Mississippi River; Carlisle County, Kentucky to the east across the river; Hickman County, Kentucky to the southeast across the river; Fulton County, Kentucky to the south across the river; New Madrid County to the southwest and Scott County to the northwest. Mississippi County Circuit Clerk’s Office Information

The Circuit Clerk is an elected position that holds a four-year term and is elected by the county at large. The Circuit Clerk is mainly responsible for maintaining complete and accurate records of the court, collections, accounting for, and disbursing all monies paid into the court; and performing other duties, as necessary to assist in the court in performing its duties.

Some of the duties of the circuit court clerk and office staff are:

  • Receive, process, and maintain the judgments’, rules orders, and all other proceedings of the court.

    Mississippi County Recorder of Deeds Office Information

    The Recorder of Deeds an elected position that holds a four-year term. The responsibilities of the Recorder of Deeds Office is to record, index, and preserve various land record documents that include deeds, mortgages, mechanics leans, releases and plats, among others. To allow full access to deeds recorded throughout the office history, several indexes are also maintained, which include grantor-grantee indexes, tract indexes, and plat maps. The Recorder of Deeds also handles marriage license applications, and issues certified copies of marriage licenses. This office has records of marriage licenses that back to the early 1900’s. The Recorder of Deeds also records military discharges.
