Tunica County Overview

Created in 1836, Tunica County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 10,778. Its county seat is Tunica, and Robinsonville is the largest community. The county is named for the Tunica Native Americans, most of whom migrated to central Louisiana during the colonial period. Since the late 20th century, it is known for Tunica Resorts (formerly Robinsonville), an unincorporated community that is the site of nine casino resorts. It is one of the top six destinations in the country in terms of gambling revenues. The county has a total area of 455 square miles of land, plus 26 square miles of water. Three of the bordering counties lie in Arkansas, Crittenden to the north, Phillips to the southwest, and Lee to the west. Remaining adjacent counties are all in Mississippi and are: DeSoto to the northeast, Tate to the east, Panola to the southeast, Quitman to the south, and Coahoma to the southwest. Although zip code 38676 is the most populous in the county, it is one of four zip codes used.
