Established in 1833, Noxubee County, Mississippi had a population of 11,545 as of the 2010 census and its name came from the Choctaw word nakshobi, meaning to stink. The county seat and largest community is Macon. The county has an area of 700 square miles, 695 of land and five of water. Neighboring counties are: Lowndes, MS to the north, Pickens, AL to the east, Sumter, AL to the southeast, Kemper, MS to the south, Winston, MS to the west, and Oktibbeha, MS to the northwest.
