Knox County is located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The county was formed in 1799 and named after Henry Knox, the former United States Secretary of War (1785–94). The county seat is Barbourville. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 31,790 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 388 square miles of which 386 square miles is land and 1.5 square miles is water. Knox County borders the following counties: Clay County to the northeast; Bell County to the southeast; Whitley County to the southwest and Laurel County to the northwest.
