Grundy County, Iowa Overview

Established in 1851, Grundy County, Iowa had a population of 12,453 as of the 2010 census. The county was named for Felix Grundy, a statesman, Senator, and Attorney General under President James K. Polk. The county seat and largest community is Grundy Center. The first courthouse was built in 1861. The wooden, two-story building contained a courtroom, but was used for other purposes, including housing the office of the sheriff, county treasurer, the judge, as well as a chamber for the jury. The cornerstone for a second courthouse was laid on November 11, 1891. The county’s total area is 502 square miles, all of which is land. Five Iowa counties border Grundy county lines: Butler to the north, Black Hawk to the east, Tama to the southeast, Marshall to the southwest, and Hardin to the west. The largest zip code in the county is 50638; however, a total of 15 additional zip codes are used in the county.
