Clay County, Iowa Overview

Clay County, Iowa has its county seat and largest community in Spencer. As of the 2010 census, the population was 16,667. Its name is in honor of Henry Clay, Jr., a colonel who died in action in the Mexican-American War, and son of Henry Clay, famous American statesman from Kentucky. Clay County holds the annual Clay County Fair. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 573 square miles of which 567 square miles is land and 5.4 square miles is water. Clay County is also home to the large Barringer Slough wetland. Clay County is neighbored by Dickinson County, IA to the north, Palo Alto County, IA to the east, Buena Vista County, IA to the south, and O’Brien County, IA to the west.
