Winnebago County is located in the state of Illinois. The county was formed out of Jo Daviess County and LaSalle County on January 16, 1836, and named after the Winnebago Tribe of American Indians. Rockford is the largest city in the county and also the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 295,266 people, making it the 7th most populous county in Illinois behind Cook County and its 5 surrounding collar counties. It covers a total area of 519 square miles, of which 5.9 square miles is water and 513 square miles is land. Winnebago County borders the following counties: Rock County, Wisconsin, to the north; Boone County to the east; DeKalb County to the southeast; Ogle County to the south; Stephenson County to the west; and Green County, Wisconsin, to the northwest.
The Winnebago County Clerk is an elected official who serves as the administrative arm of the Winnebago County Government. The county clerk is responsible for a number of responsibilities that are divided into four categories:
