The county was formed in 1821 and named after Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 while attempting to capture Quebec City, Canada. The county seat is Hillsboro. As of 2013, the county has a population of 29654. The county has a total area of 710 square miles, 704 square miles of which is land, and 6 square miles is water.
