Montgomery County is located in the state of Illinois. The county was formed in 1821 and named after Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 while attempting to capture Quebec City, Canada. The county seat is Hillsboro. As of 2013, the county has a population of 29654. The county has a total area of 710 square miles, 704 square miles of which is land, and 6 square miles is water. The county consists of 28 ZIP codes, with ZIP code 62056 recorded as the one with the largest population. Montgomery County borders the following counties: Sangamon County, Illinois to the north; Bond County, Illinois to the south; Shelby County, Illinois to the east; Macoupin County, Illinois to the west; Christian County, Illinois to the northeast; Madison County, Illinois to the southwest, and; Fayette County, Illinois to the southeast.
