Rockdale County is located in the state of Georgia. The county was created on October 18, 1870, and named after Rockdale Baptist Church, which received its name from the granite strata that rests under the county’s red clay top soil. The county seat is Conyers. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 85,215 people and a total area of 132 square miles, of which 2.3 square miles is water and 130 square miles is land, making it the second-smallest county in Georgia by area. Rockdale County borders the following counties: Gwinnett County to the north, Walton County to the northeast, Newton County to the east, Henry County to the southwest, and DeKalb County to the west.
