Las Animas County is located in the U.S. state of Colorado. The county was formed in 1866 and named after the Purgatoire River, which was originally named El Rio de las Animas Perdidas. The county seat is Trinidad. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 14,446 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,775 square miles, of which 4,773 square miles is land and 2.7 square miles is water. It is the largest county by area in Colorado. Las Animas County borders the following counties: Otero County to the north; Pueblo County to the north; Bent County to the northeast; Baca County to the east; Union County, New Mexico to the south; Colfax County, New Mexico to the southwest; Costilla County to the west; and Huerfano County to the northwest.
