Greene County, Arkansas Overview

Located in the state of Arkansas, Greene County has a population of about 42,090, according to the US Census Bureau. The county seat, and largest community is Paragould, which sits atop Crowley’s Ridge. Greene County comprises the Paragould, AR Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Jonesboro–Paragould, AR Combined Statistical Area. The total square miles of the county are 580, 578 of that is land, and the remaining 1.9 square miles is water. Greene County was formed on 5 November 1833 out of portions of Lawrence County and originally contained parts of present Clay and Craighead counties. The county was named for Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene. The first county seat was in Benjamin Crowley’s home. By 1836, when Arkansas became a state, the county seat was in a settlement called “Paris” (not to be confused with present-day Paris, Arkansas). Neighboring Arkansas counties include: Clay to the north, Craighead to the south, Lawrence to the southwest, and Randolph to the northwest. Dunklin County, Missouri neighbors to the east. There are eight zip codes that cover the county; however, 72450 is the largest.

The Circuit Clerk is the Clerk of the Circuit Courts and acts as the ex-officio recorder of Greene County. The Circuit Court is made up of Domestic Relations, Civil, Criminal, and Juvenile Courts.

Administrative duties of the Circuit Clerk are to maintain a record of all proceedings of the Circuit Courts and to prep the dockets for these Courts. The Circuit Clerk issues summons, warrants, subpoenas and writs as authorized by the Circuit Court for delivery by the Greene County Sheriff or private court-appointed process server. The Circuit Clerk also maintains a file of all cases pending with the Circuit Court, as well as all the records of past court cases and their dispositions.
