Vernon County, Wisconsin Overview

Vernon County is located in the West Central region of Wisconsin. The county seat is Viroqua. The county was created in 1851 from portions of Richland and Crawford counties. It was originally named Bad Ax County before it was changed to Vernon in 1862. The new name was chosen to refer to the green fields of wheat found in the county as well as Mount Vernon. According to the 2014 census, 30,362 people live in the 816-square mile area. The bordering counties are Monroe County in the north, Juneau County in the northeast, Sauk County in the east, Richland County in the southeast, Crawford County in the south, Allamakee County (IA) in the southwest, Houston County (MN) in the west, and La Crosse County in the northwest.
