Marinette County, Wisconsin Overview

Marinette County is located in the northern region of Wisconsin. Its county seat is also called Marinette. The county was created in 1879. There are two theories as to the origins of the county and town’s name. Some state that these locations were named after the Queen of France, Marie Antoinette. It is believed that the French and Native Americans would often shorten the name by pronouncing it as “Marinette.” Others believe that these locations were named after a French-Indian woman, Marinette Jacobs. The county’s total area is 1,550 square miles with a population of 41,749 (2010). The adjacent counties are Florence County in the north, Dickinson County (MI) in the northeast, Menominee County (MI) in the east, Door County in the south, Oconto County in the southwest, and Forest County in the west. The zip codes are 54102, 54104, 54112, 54114, 54119, 54125, 54143, 54151, 54156, 54157, 54159, 54161, and 54177.
