Iron County, Wisconsin Overview

Iron County is located in the northern region of Wisconsin. The county seat is Hurley. The county was created in 1893 and named for the iron ore found within the area. Based on the 2010 census, there are 5,916 people living in the 919-square mile area which makes this the third least populated county in the state. The adjacent counties are Ashland County in the north and west, Gogebic County (MI) in the northeast, Vilas County in the east, and Price County in the south. The County Clerk has several duties such as preparing the County Budget, serving as secretary to the County Board, and acting as Human Resources Coordinator. In the latter role, the Clerk is responsible for handling payroll records and worker compensation insurance.
