King County, Washington Overview

King County is located in the North Puget Sound region of Washington. The county seat is Seattle which is also the largest city in the state. The county was created in 1852 and originally named in honor of William Rufus King, a US Vice President. In 1986, there was a motion to change the namesake from William King to Martin Luther King Jr. It was officially changed in 2005. According to the 2017 census, there are around 2,188,649 people living in the 2,307-square mile area which makes King County the most populated county in the state. The county is bordered in the north by Snohomish County, in the northeast by Chelan County, in the east by Kittitas County, in the south by Pierce County, and in the west by Kitsap County. Access to court case information, documents, and recorded hearings is through the Clerk’s office. These records with the exception of those that are not open to public inspection are available for viewing during business hours. In order to obtain a marriage license in King County, the applicants must apply together, in person, at the County Clerk’s office. Both parties must present their state-issued picture ID, military ID, or passport, and know their social security number
