Island County, Washington Overview

Island County is located in the North Puget Sound region of Washington. Its county seat is Coupeville. The county was created in 1852 by the legislature of Oregon Territory, making it the 8th oldest county in the state. Its name is due to the fact that it is made up of islands. The total area of the county is 517 square miles. Based on the 2017 census, approximately 83,159 people live in the county. The adjacent counties are Skagit County in the north, Snohomish County in the east, Kitsap County in the south, Jefferson County in the west, and San Juan County in the northwest. The County Clerk acts as the administrative and financial officer of the Superior Court. As administrative officer, the Clerk is responsible for the safekeeping of all court records and exhibits. As financial officer, he/she is responsible for collecting fees, fines, restitution, and the like, maintaining the monies in a trust account, and disbursing them as ordered by the court. The Clerk is also responsible for providing a calendar of the scheduled proceedings. He/she is tasked with attending all hearings and creating an independent record of all proceedings which are accessible to the public.
