Open Public Record Act:

The Vermont Public Records Law gives the public the right to access public records of government bodies at all levels in the state. These records are all documentary materials that are created or received by a public body. Anyone can request to inspect or obtain a copy of a public record. However, not all records are considered public such as trade secrets, records that violate an individual’s right to privacy if released, and student records.

Birth Records:

The Department of Health issues certified copies of birth records from 2013 to present for a fee. The Vermont State Archives and Records Administration, on the other hand, issues certified copies for births prior to 2013. To order a birth certificate, you will need to submit a completed application form and a check or money order made payable to “Vermont Department of Health.” The cost of a certified copy is $10 each.

Marriage Records:

The Department of Health issues certified copies of marriage records from 2013 to present for a fee. The Vermont State Archives and Records Administration, on the other hand, issues certified copies for marriages prior to 2013. To order a marriage certificate, you will need to submit a completed application form and a check or money order made payable to “Vermont Department of Health.” The cost of a certified copy is $10 each. Take note that only the Vermont State Archives and Records Administration will issue copies of a civil union certificate.

Divorce Records:

All records of dissolution are only available from the Department of Health. However, only divorce records starting 2013 will be available from this office. Any divorces that were finalized prior to 2013 will only be available from the Vermont State Archives and Records Administration. To order a record, you will need to complete an application form and submit it along with a check or money order made payable to “Vermont Department of Health.” The cost of a certified copy is $10.

Death Records:

Death certificates are available from the Health Department. To order a record, you will need to complete an application form and submit it along with a check or money order made payable to “Vermont Department of Health.” The cost of a certified copy is $10.

Missing People:

Notices of missing persons in the state of Vermont who have been missing for more than 60 days are posted by the Vermont Intelligence Center. Each posting includes the person’s photo (if possible) as well as information on each case. You can also check the information on each missing person case filed with the Vermont State Police by searching the map posted on its website.

Elected Officials:

The official state website of Vermont lists all elected officials along with links to their website. For example, the current governor of the state is Phil Scott. Along with his name, you’ll find a link to the governor’s website.
