Uintah County Overview
Named for the Ute Native American tribe that once lived in the basin, Uintah county was established in 1880. Vernal is both the county seat and the largest community. The population was 32,588 as of the 2010 census. Uintah County is the largest natural gas producer in Utah, with 272 billion cubic feet produced in 2008. The county’s total area is 4,480 square miles of land, plus 22 square miles of water. Uintah County is centered in the Uintah Basin, which runs from western Colorado on the east to the Wasatch Mountains on the west, and from the Uinta Mountains on the north to the Roan Plateau on the south. This basin was formed by a prehistoric lake (“Uinta Lake”) during the late Tertiary period. The county’s geography ranges from high mountain terrain (Uinta Mountains) to the fertile Ashley Valley (site of the county seat), to a rugged and desolate canyonland which includes the Dinosaur National Monument, to desolate and largely uninhabited hills in the south (“The Bookcliffs” to locals; officially Roan Plateau). Three mines are in the county: Dyer, Little Water and Uteland. Three Colorado counties border to the northeast (Moffat), east (Rio Blanco), and southeast (Garfield). Remaining neighbors are all in Utah and are: Daggett to the north, Grand to the south, Emery to the southwest, Carbon to the west, Duchesne to the west, and Summit to the northwest. Uintah County is also home to five nationally protected areas: Steinaker State Park, Red Fleet State Park, Ouray National Wildlife Refuge, Dinosaur National Monument, and Ashley National Forest. Of the 11 zip codes used by the county, the most populous is 84078.
