Emery County Overview
Established in 1880, Emery County in Utah had a population of 10,976 as of the 2010 census. The name is compliments of former Utah Territory governor, George W. Emery. The county seat is Castle Dale; however, the largest city is Huntington. The total area of the county is 4,462 square miles of land, plus ten square miles of water. The Green River forms the eastern boundary. The Wasatch Plateau, a mountainous area, sits along the western boundary. The main population of the county lives along the base of these mountains. The San Rafael Swell occupies most of the area to the east. Range Creek rises in Emery County and has recently been shown to have pristine remains of the Fremont culture. The State of Utah owns the site and is currently identifying the remains and developing a long-term conservation plan. Bordering counties are: Sanpete to the northwest, Sevier to the southwest, Wayne to the south, Grand to the east, and Carbon to the north. Emery is also home to portions of two nationally protected areas: Capitol Reef National Park, and Manti-La Sal National Forest. A total of nine zip codes are assigned to the county, the most populous of which is 84528.
