Utah County Overview

Established in 1850 and named for the Ute Native Americans in Spanish (Yuta), Utah County in the state of Utah is the second most populous county in the state with a population of 516,564 as of the 2010 census. The county seat, Provo is also the largest community. Provo is the state’s third largest city. In 2010, the center of population of Utah was in Utah County, in the city of Saratoga Springs. Utah County is one of seven counties in the United States to share the same name as the state it is in (the other six counties are Arkansas County, Hawaii County, Idaho County, Iowa County, New York County, and Oklahoma County). The county’s total area is 2,003 square miles of land, plus 141 square miles of water. Utah Valley lies at the center of the county, lined by the mountains of the Wasatch Range on the east. Utah Lake occupies a large part of the valley. The elevation ranges from 4,487 feet above sea level at the lake to 11,928 feet at the peak of Mount Nebo. Bordering counties are: Duchesne to the east, Carbon to the southeast, Sanpete to the south, Juab to the southwest, Wasatch to the east, Tooele to the west, and Salt Lake to the north. The county is also home to all or part of four nationally protected areas: Ashley National Forest, Manti-La Sal National Forest, Timpanogos Cave National Monument, and Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. The 1984 film Footloose was filmed at various locations in Utah County: American Fork, Lehi, Orem, Payson, and Provo.
