Horry County Overview

Horry County, South Carolina was established in 1801 and is in the Pee Dee region of the state about 90 miles north of Charleston, and 130 miles east of Columbia, the state capital. As of the 2010 census, its population of 289,650 made it the fifth most populous county in the state. Conway is the county seat; however, Myrtle Beach is the largest community. The county name comes from a Revolutionary war hero, Peter Horry. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,255 square miles, of which 1,134 square miles is land and 121 square miles is water. It is the largest county by area in South Carolina. The highest point in the county is 124 ft. above sea level. Horry County is in the northeastern corner of South Carolina. It is a diverse land made up of rivers, beaches, forest and swamps. Horry County is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Little Pee Dee River and Drowning Creek (also known as the Lumber River) on Horry’s western side, and North Carolina to the north. Waccamaw River, approximately 140 miles long, runs through southeastern North Carolina and eastern South Carolina into Horry County. The river runs through the coastal plain, along the eastern border between the two states, and into the Atlantic Ocean. The county is home to a portion of the nationally protected Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge, and neighboring counties include three in North Carolina: Columbus to the northeast, Brunswick to the east, and Robeson to the northwest. The three remaining neighbors are all in South Carolina and are: Dillon to the northwest, Marion to the west, and Georgetown to the southwest.
