Sherman County, Oregon Overview

Sherman County can be found in the north central region of Oregon. The county seat is Moro. The county was established in 1889 and named in honor of a Union general, William Tecumseh Sherman, who fought during the American Civil War. The county has a total area of 831 square miles and an estimated population of 1,710 (2016 census) which makes it the second least populated county in the state. It is bordered in the north by Klickitat County (Washington), in the east by Gilliam County, and in the south and west by Wasco County. The zip codes are 97029, 97033, 97039, 97050, and 97065.

Sherman County Officials Information

The County Clerk is in charge of the safekeeping of public records for Sherman County. This includes preserving official records for real property transactions, County Court and Budget Committee minutes, ordinances, resolutions, agreements, and other miscellaneous county documents. Maps from a licensed surveyor are also kept in this office.

In Sherman County, the County Clerk also serves as the Clerk of the County Court for all probate matters, small estate cases, and juvenile cases. As the chief election officer in the county, the County Clerk is also responsible for voter registration, maintaining voting lists, accepting declarations of candidacy, and conducting elections. The County Clerk also plans, prepares, and records all Board of Property Tax Appeals hearings as well as maintains the official board record. In addition, the County Clerk also issues marriage licenses and domestic partnership licenses; solemnizes marriages; accepts passport applications; assists with property, historical, and genealogy research; and serves as Notary Public.
