Marion County, Oregon Overview

Marion County can be found in the northwest region of Oregon. Salem is the county seat. Marion County was created in 1843 and originally named the Champooick District. In 1849, the name was changed to Marion County in honor of Francis Marion, a Continental Army general who fought in the American Revolutionary War. The total area of the county is 1,194 square miles. According to the 2016 survey, there are approximately 336,316 people living in the area. Marion County is bordered by Clackamas County and Wasco County in the northeast, Jefferson County in the southeast, Linn County in the south, Polk County in the west, and Yamhill County in the northwest. Marion County Officials Information

The Marion County Clerk’s Office provides the citizens of the county access to property records. The office is also responsible for conducting elections within the county and handling voter registration. The County Clerk’s Office has five divisions: Administration, Board of Property Tax Appeals, Records Management, Elections, and Licensing and Recording. The Records Center and Archives Department of the County Clerk stores historical books and documents for Marion County. Citizens may submit a request to view records through the Recording Agency. The Licensing and Recording Division records and maintains the official record of deeds, mortgages, liens and other property records. This division is also responsible for issuing marriage licenses, accepting passport applications, issuing declarations of domestic partnerships, and accepting liquor license applications.

The Assessor’s Office handles the appraisal and assessment of all properties in Marion County. The office is also responsible for maintaining all records on property tax accounts that have real market value of over $42 billion and assessed value of over $24.2 billion. The office also handles special programs such as exemptions and deferrals as well as handles special assessments and enterprise zone exemptions. In addition, it provides the public with maps, descriptions, and ownership of properties and property locations.

Court records are available for viewing at the Marion County Courthouse via the five public terminals in the Records lobby. To request copies of court records, you may submit a request in person or via mail. Court records that are from before 1986 are in microfilm which means that you will need to use the Microfilm Request form.
